BACK HOME ALREADY!..

We cannot place the photos of all our former patients in this section, but at least here are some of them. The Department and its "graduates" try to keep in touch - they have been through a lot together. Other boys and girls (together with their parents) are undergoing maintenance treatment, which is a long-term therapy taking place out of hospital at home. You can see some of them here as well.

Lenur Memetov was 20 in 1998, Igor Savchuk - 13, Alexei Ametov - 17… These three guys have reached the 5-year mark. Healthy! All these 5 years they kept to strict medical protocol and were regularly examined. On June 1, 1998 on the Day of the Recovered Child, they received graduate diplomas of the Department of Haematology of the Crimean Republican Children's Clinical Hospital. Valentin Usachenko, Head of the Department, personally presented them to the boys.

* Olga Bavarovskaya 13 years old, has recovered from Leukaemia. After a course of Insulin therapy, the blood sugar level normalized. In January 2002, Olga will come to the department for PCR (the research on DNK hepatitis). Olga will also be kept under close supervision, in accordance with her belonging to a high-risk group and with the difficulties of entering remission.

* Sasha Tereschenko is at our department since December 2000. She has auto-immune trombocital purpura (continuously relapsing), which is resistant to the treatment by cortico-steroids (hormons). What is bad in this disease? Every injury triggers bleeding, both external and internal (hematoms, bruises). Besides, any infection aggravates the disease.
However, since June 2001 we notice a spontaneous remission. At the present time the state of Sasha's health seems not hazardous.

* For Serge Ibragimov all the severities of the hospital phase are in the past! The young man (he is 15) was discharged from hospital in full remission to keep on receiving maintenance treatment.

* Vladimir Bannik spent the end of 2000 and the first half of 2001 at our Department. Now the hospital part is in the past. Vladimir is at home. He is getting maintenance treatment. However, in addition to the main diagnose Vladimir has also got a viral Hepatitis. He requires LAFERONE (also known as Introne-A) !

* Nina Emurlaeva from an urban-type village Lenino had a relapse after 4 years of remission. Anti-relapse treatment was started. However, after 5 blocks of the treatment (which is half of the course), while being on therapeutic leave, Nina was infected with Salmonellez. That meant that the chemotherapy had to stop. Nina was discharged from hospital and now she is receiving maintenance treatment at home. The girl is currently having remission. Indeed she has undergone an intensive therapy. Will this be enough? At the moment, nobody can answer that.

* 9-year-old Michael Kiryanov has finished the hospital stage of treatment. Farewell!

* Denis Alekseev was at our Department with a heavy form of Leukaemia. He received a modified course of polio-chemotherapy in accordance with his diagnosis. Now Denis is in remission. Though, at the moment the boy has new problems - he is infected with Hepatitis B… In 2001 Denis received a diploma for coming 3rd in the art competition for children and young people with functional disabilities "This is my world". Here you can see one of his paintings.

* Cristina Kupreeva was brought to the Department in 1999 when she was 4 years old - she was diagnosed with an extremely heavy form of Aplastic Anaemia. A Bone Marrow Transplantation was performed at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital in Moscow. At Easter 2001 we received another news from the Hospital:
"This year Easter has fallen on Cristina Kupreeva's birthday, our long-standing favourite. For a birthday present Cristina received a pretty doll in a princess's dress. Cristina has undergone a successful Bone Marrow Transplantation with her sister Rita as a donor. Now the doctors are confident that Cristina has become a healthy child. She is growing and developing well, getting ready for school. Cristina was absolutely fascinated by the beautiful doll, while we were happy that the illness had left the girl's life"

* Anna Kapralova was born in Sevastopol. In 1995 the girl was brought to hospital for the first time with a diagnosis of Acute Leukaemia. Three more months and the girl could have been discharged from hospital, but the analysis results (bone marrow puncture) showed a late relapse. Anna has undergone a full course of anti-relapse treatment and now she is at home. GOOD LUCK TO YOU, GIRL!

* 9-year-old Igor Ganzhala spent the whole treatment period at the Department all by himself, without his mother. In February 2001 when intensive chemo- and radiation therapy was finished, the boy was discharged from hospital. He was collected by his grandmother.

* Sasha Shtilik was very "popular" with the department, especially with… the female part (see photo). Sasha was already "a young man" - elegant on the one hand and naughty and spontaneous on the other. If you asked about Shtilik, you would hear the following answer: "He is undergoing therapy. He makes sarcastic jokes and gives hugs to nurses now and then. He is O.K!" Now the hospital part of treatment is over. Sasha is receiving maintenance therapy at home. Still once in a month he comes to the Department and spends here 2-3 days to get intravenous infusion. And everyone is waiting for him! : ) You can read Sasha's poems dedicated to the doctors here.

* On our web-site we placed a request from the parents of Olga Yarmolchuk about acquiring an expensive antibiotic Dactinomycin (= Cosmegen). At the end of May 2000 the money sent by Muscovite D. was spent on 4 bottles of this medicine, necessary for the treatment. The girl has undergone the full course of treatment. Thanks for help - from Olga, her mother and all of us!!!

* In Autumn 2000 Nikita Paranyak was supposed to enter first grade at school, but because of the illness he was not able to do that. However, he took a firm decision to study at home. ""For his age my son knows a lot. He knows lots of poetry, makes up crosswords, builds new toys from old bits and pieces (all the neighbours from our street were bringing him broken toys so that could fix them). He wants to continue living!"

* Vladimir Khachaturyan has successfully undergone anti-relapse treatment. Though he still needs your help. When Vladimir fell ill, his father left the family. And while the boy was in hospital, his grandmother died. Now he lives together with his Mum and they have not got any money even for the most necessary items. Come to help!

* Vladimir Kalninsh has finished intensive treatment and now is receiving maintenance therapy at home. At the same time it is still too early to talk about full remission. Vladimir has still got the remains of tumour. Perhaps, it is not malignant any more. An examination after the end of the maintenance treatment will give the answer. Good luck to you, Vladimir!

* Masha Galaburda - one of the best crafts people in our Department. Her art works were very popular at the children's art fair, which took place during the International Symposium in Yalta in May 2000. At the Symposium Masha's mother, Tamila Galaburda, made a speech on behalf of the Parents' Initiative. And in 2001 Masha's embroidery came 5th at the art competition for children and young people with functional disabilities "This is my world".

* Dima Zagryzly, 4 years old - Lymphoma, B-Cell Leukaemia, Neuro-Leucosis… A full range… Dima was brought to the Department in an extremely heavy condition. Moreover, he had heaviest complications as a result of chemotherapy. But - in spite of all difficulties! - the treatment is over! In June 2000 the boy was discharged from hospital. Though haematologists will be monitoring him for quite a while.

* 7-year-old Victoria Kulakova has successfully finished a course of anti-Lymphoma treatment.

* Ksenia Rupcheva (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, non-T Cell) in 1999 found herself at our Department for the second time: a relapse after 7 years of treatment. But nobody was going to give up - neither the girl, nor her mother, nor the doctors. Anti-relapse treatment started. Ksenia entered the second remission. In February 2000 Ksenia finished the hospital part of treatment and went back home.

* Paul Pugachev left hospital in May 1999. Our best wishes to the boy and his parents! We look forward to seeing you at the Day of the Recovered Child (1 June).

* At present Daniel Novitsky (Simferopol) is also receiving maintenance treatment. In January 1999 he was 9 years old. He entered remission on 30 December 1998 - on his name day (the day of Holy Prophet Daniel).

* Platon Shishkov from Eupatorium was through with the protocol treatment in May 1998. Now he is undergoing the phase of long-term maintenance treatment.

*

* Lena Lifanova was brought to hospital with Leukaemia in 1990. She was 5 at the time. She was the first child in our Department who was treated using the German methods. During the Soviet times we had to import the medicines secretly and to bring them to hospital, hiding them in our pockets.

* 17-year-old Alexey Ametov lives in Eupatorium. He was diagnosed with Leukaemia on 23 March 1989. Alexey was the first child in the Crimea to receive treatment in Germany. In 1998 he graduated from school and entered the College of Transport.

* Lenur Memetov is from Simferopol. He was brought to the Department in 1992 with a diagnosis of Acute Limphoblastic Leukaemia. Now he is already 20. At the end of 1998 Lenur got married. And he has a young son already!
